Intro: Art as a Social Practice

Art as a Social Practice is a service-learning course in the College of Fine Performing and Communication Arts at Wayne State University, taught by Associate Professor (Research) Education, Elizabeth Barton and Doctoral student in Counseling/Art Therapy, Julie Moreno.

The context of this special topics seminar was built on intellectual reflection, study with hands-on experience, and  traditional classroom learning with active engagement in the Detroit community. The course will integrate two components: (1) an academic classroom experience, and (2) a community-based project. Throughout this term, we will investigate two themes, (1) the social role of arts in society and (2) the impact of the arts on placemaking through readings, in class and online discussions, and through reflective writing and a culminating term project.

The intention of this class blog is to document our endeavors and accomplishments through the course of the Winter 2013 term.
